Overview

Some of the most obvious signs of aging in both men and women are a sagging face with loose neck skin, wrinkled skin, or deep creases along facial structures. A facelift, or rhytidectomy, by our Scottsdale, AZ board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. John Williams, is used to smooth loose skin on the face and neck, tighten or remove excess skin and fat, and reposition sagging facial soft tissues. The result should be a smooth, natural, and refreshed look. Dr. Williams avoids the pulled, tight look that is neither youthful nor natural looking.

Facelifts are common for patients of all ages, and can be combined with other procedures including eyelid lifts and brow lifts. Along with his highly skilled team, Dr. Williams performs many variations of the facelift and will use the technique that best suits your needs. The procedure usually requires an overnight stay so that the patient can comfortably recover with the aid of an experienced surgical nurse.

Best Candidates

Good candidates for facelifts are men or women who demonstrate:

  • Deep lines that run from the corners of your nose to the corners of your mouth

  • Loss of a well-defined jaw line

  • Jowls that form along the jawline

  • Loose skin, wrinkles, or excess fatty tissue in the neck

What to Expect

During the consultation, we will evaluate the patient’s overall health along with their skin quality, skin looseness, folds, and wrinkles. In addition, the underlying bony anatomy will be assessed and a facial rejuvenation treatment plan will be created that will help attain the best results. There are several variations of a surgical facelifts and Dr. Williams will choose the best one to correct the specific signs of aging. It is very common to combine nonsurgical techniques with a facelift to maximize results. This may include wrinkle fillers or BOTOX, as well as a chemical peel or a laser treatment to address skin irregularities on the surface, such as scars, sunspots and blemishes.

Facelift Recovery

Most patients will spend the first night after the surgery in the after care center so they can be cared for by experienced surgical nurses, and then typically discharged the next morning. Swelling and bruising are expected after facelift surgery. The swelling and bruising will start to resolve during the first week after surgery, although this will vary between patients. Usually, patients may go out in public within 10 days with the aid of camouflage make-up. Most patients can resume modest activity in 2-3 weeks.  A complete recovery from a facelift surgery occurs in about 6-8 weeks. Supplemental procedures, such as nonsurgical skin rejuvenation, can usually be performed at this time.
