Overview

Women with overly large breasts often face multiple health problems, including unbearable back, neck  and shoulder pain, chafing, numbness and tingling in the arms and hands, difficulty buying clothes and limited physical activity. A breast reduction surgery by Scottsdale, AZ board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. John Williams, can be life changing and give women much more than just smaller and suppler breasts. Many experience relief from physical and emotional discomforts, an ability to exercise the way they want, and clothing options they have never had before. By removing excess breast tissue and skin, the surgery can make your breasts more proportional to the rest of your body. The nipple will be repositioned and the areola size may be reduced as well. Some insurance companies may cover the cost of breast reduction surgery depending on the size of the breasts and the symptoms they cause. Dr. Williams and his caring staff can provide you with an individualized treatment plan and go over any questions you may have about the procedure.

Best Candidates

Breast reduction is usually performed after breast development has stopped, since childbirth and breast-feeding may have significant and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of the breasts. Nevertheless, many women decide to undergo breast reduction surgery before having children.

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
  • Heavy, sagging breasts with very low nipples
  • Breasts that are too large in proportion to your frame
  • Restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of your breasts
  • One breast that is much larger than the other

Surgical Technique

Breast reduction surgery involves removing excess breast tissue as well as skin to create a smaller, firmer, more proportioned breast. The incisions typically go around the areola, down the center of the beast from the base fo the areola to the breast crease and then in the breast crease. Many patients term this the "anchor incision". Each incision is meticulously closed so that they blend into the natural creases and folds of the breast over time.

What to Expect

After breast reduction surgery, patients will immediately feel lighter on top. The amount of breast tissue removed during surgery will be based on the initial evaluation and the patient’s preference. Often, the reduction results in a decrease in one or two cup sizes. For the first four weeks, Dr. Williams will recommend the use of a sports bra for comfort during the recovery period. Patients may go back to work within 3-4 days and may resume vigorous physical activity such as exercise in 6-8 weeks.
